Got a late start today. Didn’t sleep well due to the winds and thunderstorms which started around 0200. Winds were gusting at ~34mph knocking the RV around a bit. Thunder and lightning started around 0300. The thunder was very loud and the lightning lit up the sky so bright that I could see it with my eyes closed! It was awesome to watch! The winds were quite intense and Kirk got up around 0330 to bring the slides in, mostly to protect the slide toppers that were making so much noise we couldn’t sleep. Winds are expected to be worse later this week (~50mph) so we’re bracing for that.
Spent the day exploring Rapid City a little. Had a late (11am) breakfast downtown, took Otis to a huge off-leash dog park and checked out a few Roadside America (app) attractions. Otis loved the park where he could roam off leash. We especially loved the common sense regulations regarding their off-leash policy where owners are held responsible for their dogs. The walking trail at the dog park is one mile.
Walked around the parks at Storybook Island since it was closed. Beautiful park with lots of trees and creeks. Otis did not demonstrate good behavior here…once again, he had selective hearing and took off chasing after ducks. Luckily he didn’t jump into the creek once they landed.
Weather – around 59* but wind is making it feel like 47*. Rain expected today and another day of high winds.
Observations – there are a ton of churches here. Many parks with a lot of lush green grass, trees and creeks.
Roadside America attractions visited – Prospector Johnny One Feather Statue, Storybook Island (closed until 5/31)
Notable – great dog park where Otis could roam off leash at Robbinsdale Dog Park in Rapid City, beautiful parks.
Food - Tally's Silver Spoon
Tally’s Silver Spoon, Downton Rapid City. Kirk (pancakes and bacon. They charge an extra $7 for the fruit on top!) – so so. Lynn (avocado toast) – very good. Great coffee. Pricey for what you get though. Plus they charge a 3.5% Living Wage surcharge. Total cost = $56 (excl. tip).
