October 9, 2025 (Thu.) - Travel Day : Michigan to Indiana
Today marked another travel day—finally leaving Michigan behind and heading toward Indiana. Kirk had booked us a spot at Indian Lakes Campground in Wolcottville, which is conveniently close to Shipshewana, a place we’ve been eager to explore.
Lynn was up early at 5:55 AM after a restless night. The upside? She had some quiet time to catch up on the blog, which is running several days behind. Mornings like this are perfect for writing. By 9:00 AM, Kirk was up and we began our usual departure routine.
We hit the road by 10:50 AM for a roughly 200-mile drive that took just over three hours. The journey was smooth, aside from a few low bridge alerts on the GPS—none lower than 14’3″, so we were in the clear. Around 11:45 AM, we stopped at a rest area in Laingsburg, MI. It felt a little different without Otis around. The stop was brief but memorable—we saw a designated handicapped spot for truckers, something we’d never noticed before. It makes sense, but it was a first for us.
By 1:30 PM, we crossed into Indiana! The interstate was typical—just miles of blacktop—but the final stretch to the campground took us through scenic farmland and narrow country roads. We even spotted another fellow Momentum owner on the road. Around 2:00 PM, we spotted our first horse and buggy, a charming sign we were nearing Amish country.
We arrived at Indian Lakes Campground by 2:20 PM. Only one site could accommodate our rig—Site #1—right next to the camp store and along the main dirt road. Not the most private spot, but it worked. With all the foot traffic and golf carts passing by, it turned out to be great for people-watching.
Our neighbors were an Amish family with six young boys in a small travel trailer. They were adorable, polite, and completely fascinated by Kirk’s motorcycle tucked inside the RV. When he unloaded it, he had quite the audience! Being near the road also meant we could hear the rhythmic trotting of the horse and buggies throughout the day—surprisingly fast and mesmerizing.
Around 5:00 PM, we took a walk around Lake Messick. The campground is massive, with many seasonal sites featuring decks and lakeside views. Since the campground closes for the season on October 15th, lots of folks were busy winterizing their setups and preparing to leave.
We didn’t take many photos today (roadside and campground pics) and kept things low-key after setting up camp. Just soaking in the new surroundings and easing into Indiana life.
Weather (Wolcottville, IN) – High 62*, Low 38*. Winds 6-16 mph. No rain, no humidity.
Traffic – None.
Food – Nothing to report.
Notable – Horse and buggies!
