October 22, 2025 (Wed.) - Travel to Kentucky!
We were finally heading out to explore a new state—Kentucky. Neither of us had been before, so we were looking forward to seeing what it had to offer. While we didn’t get a spot at the campground closest to Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, we ended up within reasonable driving distance. Bourbon Springs RV Resort in Elizabethtown had come highly recommended, and with plenty of distilleries and attractions nearby, we figured we’d have no trouble filling our days. Plus, Lynn was excited to track down three more Dambo Trolls in the area.
The morning started like most travel days. Lynn was up at 7:00 AM, greeted by a chilly 43°F that felt more like 29°F (according to the weather app). The sunrise was beautiful, but not quite enough to convince her to bundle up and head outside for photos—she stayed warm and snapped a few shots from indoors.
Kirk got up around 8:30 AM, and by 10:00 AM we were packed and on the road. The drive was about 180 miles, just over three hours. It was smooth and scenic until the GPS pinged a low bridge alert—13’7″ clearance coming up in half a mile. Our rig is 13’6″, so we didn’t have much choice but to keep going and hope Kirk’s measurements were accurate. That half mile was tense—we were holding our breath the whole way, waiting to see if we’d make it through without incident. Thankfully, we cleared it with no scraping and nothing falling off. Whew!
Not long after, we ran into some confusing signage. In Indiana, it seems like the interstate signs tell you to stay left, but then just a few feet later, you’re supposed to be on the right. Not exactly ideal when you’re maneuvering over 60 feet of vehicle. Luckily, other drivers were patient and gave us room to shift over.
After those stressful moments, we stopped for a break at the rest area in Underwood, IN around 12:30 PM. We crossed into Kentucky around 1:00 PM and hit a toll bridge with no clear way to pay. We’re guessing we’ll get something in the mail eventually—$16 for our setup.
We arrived at Bourbon Springs RV Resort around 2 PM. It’s a brand-new place with spacious gravel sites, full hookups, and even pickleball courts. The bathhouse and clubhouse aren’t open yet, but we don’t usually use those facilities anyway, so it wasn’t a big deal.
Later in the day, we headed out to explore and found a taco spot that looked promising. After six months on the road, we finally got our hands on a real crispy taco! It wasn’t quite California-level, but it was a pleasant surprise. The rest of the meal was just okay.
We also came across the Kentucky Museum of American Pocketknives and Red Hill Cutlery, home to the World’s Largest Pocket Knife. Unfortunately, it was closed, so Kirk didn’t get a chance to browse—or add another knife to his collection.
By 7:00 PM, we were back at the RV, winding down and looking forward to seeing more of Kentucky the next day.
