June 25, 2025 (Wed.) – Rain, Sylvan Lake

June 25, 2025 (Wed.) - Rain, Sylvan Lake

The day kicked off with a 3:15 AM downpour—so loud it jolted us awake. Thankfully, it was short-lived, and we both managed to drift back to sleep.

After that surprise wake-up call, we got another late start. Breakfast in the RV was followed by a few chores and bill paying. By 11:30 AM, we decided to give Sylvan Lake another shot, with the forecast looking clear until later in the afternoon.  To our surprise, the lake was pretty empty, and we even scored a shady parking spot that fit our rig perfectly—a rare win during summer!

The 1-mile loop around Sylvan Lake is labeled easy, but with no tread on Lynn’s beloved Skechers, it was a bit more challenging – especially the rocky sections and gravel inclines/declines. A walking stick would’ve helped, for sure. Kirk and Otis handled it fine, though Kirk was battling the same slick-sole issue. Still, the scenery was breathtaking, with photo-worthy views around every bend. One section had us stepping on stone slabs across the water—Otis was hesitant, but with Kirk’s encouragement, he conquered it! The shaded back half of the trail was lovely, but mosquitos were definitely out in force—Lynn ended up being their favorite snack.  Fun fact : part of National Treasure 2 was filmed at Sylvan Lake (the secret entrance to Cibola, the City of Gold!).

After the hike, we grabbed sandwiches from the Sylvan Lake store and enjoyed them on the patio overlooking the lake—simple but perfect. We also realized, if we continue to do more hikes, we definitely need new shoes!

We continued exploring Custer, stumbled upon the 4 Mile Old West Town, but opted not to pay the $8 entrance fee—the place felt more like a ghost town meets antique heap. Maybe next time.

Back at the RV by 2 PM, we soaked up the sunshine with a cold beer. By 5:30 PM, another round of rain and thunder rolled in—loud and dramatic, just how we like it. Kirk grilled burgers under the canopy, rain and all.

The evening wound down with some TV—and an unexpected guest appearance: three giant moths (well, giant by Lynn’s standards) made their way inside. Kirk took care of them, but yeah… creepy.

Just another memorable day in Custer!
