September 12, 2025 (Fri.) - The Tunnel of Trees (M-119) Ride
With rain in the forecast for the weekend, we seized the opportunity to hop on the bike and ride the Tunnel of Trees (Scenic Byway M-119) while the weather was absolutely perfect today.
Lynn discovered this gem through a Michigan-focused Facebook group (Awesome Mitten). The Tunnel of Trees is a 20-mile scenic stretch of narrow, winding roads, tree canopies, and cliffside views of Lake Michigan. It sounded too good to pass up.
But first—breakfast. We stopped in the village at Pancake Chef, a must-try given Kirk’s love of pancakes. We went for the breakfast buffet: pancakes, eggs, bacon, the works. Sadly, the pancakes didn’t live up to the name. The food was just okay… but hey, it’s a buffet in a tourist town. We gave it a shot.
We hit the road around noon, heading south to find the Tunnel of Trees (TOT). After a 45-minute drive, we weren’t entirely sure we were on the route at first, but the M-119 signs and dense tree cover gave us confidence. The ride was gorgeous—twisting roads, towering trees, Lake Michigan peeking through, and charming little towns along the way. One interesting feature was the hairpin turn known as Devil’s Elbow. Legend has it that the ravine near Devil’s Elbow is haunted by a malevolent spirit that once tormented locals.
By 1:15 PM, we reached Cross Village, which we learned is actually the starting point of the Tunnel of Trees. Since we came from the south, we’d unknowingly started at the end—but no complaints. The ride back followed the shoreline, offering spectacular Lake Michigan views. No matter which direction you take, it’s stunning.
While in Cross Village, we stopped at the historic Legs Inn, ranked as the second most iconic restaurant in Michigan. It’s named for the upside-down cast-iron stove legs that line its roof—a quirky and memorable touch. Had we not just eaten, we definitely would’ve stayed for lunch. Instead, we walked the town, did a little shopping, and continued on. (note: the 1st most iconic restaurant in Michigan is Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor…we may have to stop by if we’re in the area!)
Around 2 PM, we pulled over to enjoy the beach at Lake Michigan Wilderness Park—a peaceful spot to take in the view and stretch our legs. We made our way back to Mackinaw Village to grab a quick bite at Dixie Saloon. Nothing to write home about, but it did the job. By 4 PM, we were back at the RV, soaking up the sun and enjoying the beautiful afternoon.
Dinner was simple—tacos in the RV. With groceries running low, we got a craving for something sweet and walked up to the park store for ice cream. We grabbed a couple of Drumsticks, and just as we stepped outside, the rain made a surprise appearance! Luckily, it was just a light drizzle and a short walk back.
All in all, a perfect day of riding, exploring, and relaxing.
