September 13, 2025 – Cheboygan, MI., Broken Leaf Spring

September 13, 2025 - Cheboygan & Broken Leaf Spring Discovery.

Today’s plan was simple: head to Cheboygan, about 15 miles away, to stock up on groceries and supplies at Walmart. With a light agenda, Lynn checked her app to see if there were any quirky roadside attractions along the way—and sure enough, one popped up.

Enter the “Man-Killing Clam” at Sea Shell City, a store in Cheboygan. Naturally, we had to make a detour. The clam itself? Definitely quirky, maybe a little underwhelming, but still a fun stop. The store is massive and packed with everything nautical, beachy, pirate-y, and touristy you can imagine. True to its name, the sea shell collection is impressive.

After our clam encounter, we cruised through downtown Cheboygan, a charming little town that happened to be hosting a Farmers Market and Craft Show. We wandered a bit, picked up a homemade apple crisp, and then made our way to Walmart.

Not much to say about Walmart—except we dropped $450 restocking groceries and essentials. Kirk’s gotten really good at guessing how much we’ve spent. We always guess at the checkout line and he usually wins. He was within $5! Now fully loaded with steaks and supplies, we headed back to the RV.

The rest of the day was all about relaxing. Lynn got to chat with her son in England—Happy 26th Birthday to Grant, the second oldest! 🎉

Dinner was steaks on the grill, a welcome change after a string of so-so restaurant meals. While grilling up steaks, Kirk was inspecting the RV and discovered a broken leaf spring on the suspension of the RV!!!  Not good!  Looks like we may be staying a while longer here. Definitely shouldn’t be moving with a broken leaf spring!

We wrapped up the evening with a campfire, adult beverages, and a cotton candy sunset. Lynn even switched things up from her usual coffee with Bailey’s, trying a blackberry whiskey cocktail—heavily watered down with lemonade and ice, but still sweet and tasty. Paired with that apple crisp, it was the perfect fireside treat.

Oh—and there’s a few pics I forgot to post yesterday..Kirk and Otis, lounging together last night. Such a spoiled dog! 🐾

Note: Cheboygan, MI and Sheboygan, WI (a prior visit of ours), are pronounced almost exactly the same. The emphasis is the ending Cheboygan (shuh-BOY-gan) vs. Sheboygan (shuh-BOY-gun).

Weather – High 70*, Low 60*. Wind 5-13 mph. Rain in the morning. Not humid.

Traffic – None.

Food – Kirk’s grilled steaks!

Notable – Exploring Cheboygan, Campfire.
