June 23, 2025 (Mon.) - Early Wake-Up, Wildlife, and Winding Roads
The day kicked off at 0’dark thirty—Lynn was up by 4:30 AM, even earlier than a regular workday, and Kirk followed at 5:30 AM (which never happens unless there’s a motorcycle involved). Unfortunately, this early rise was all about making it to Rapid City by 7 AM for Lynn’s dentist appointment (it’s slightly over an hour from Custer to Rapid City). It was the best slot available without having to delay another week.
Good news: Lynn got her temporary crown placed successfully, though she couldn’t eat or drink right away thanks to her right side being numb. The silver lining? A serene sunrise drive through Custer State Park with no traffic and plenty of wildlife—we spotted turkeys, deer, sheep, and geese.
Post-appointment, we grabbed some soft pancakes at IHOP and Lynn sipped coffee carefully through a straw. With time to spare in the area, Otis got a visit to Braeburn Dog Park, and we made a Wal-Mart run before heading back to Custer. After that much activity before noon, a lazy lunch and RV nap felt like pure retirement bliss.
By 3 PM, Kirk was itching to get out, and with rain in the upcoming forecast, we decided it was finally time to ride the legendary Iron Mountain Road. Riding south to north, we got that iconic view of Mount Rushmore framed perfectly through the tunnel—a breathtaking moment! With light traffic, endless curves, multiple tunnels and sunny skies, it was everything we hoped for.
After the ride, we stopped at the Buglin’ Bull for a cold beer and snacks, enjoying the deck seating and great people-watching.
The evening wound down with a bit of TV time, and we wrapped up feeling like we made the most out of the day.
